Shorespeare is loosely based on A Midsummer Night's Dream. Shakespeare, with the help of Cupid, has landed at the Jersey Shore. Cupid inspires him to write a play about two New Jersey sweethearts, Cleo and Toni. Shakespeare is put off by their accent and way of talking, but decides to send the two teenagers on a course of true love. Toni and Cleo are determined to get married right after they graduate from high school, but in order to do so they must pass this course of true love that Cupid's pixies create and manipulate. As they travel along the boardwalk at the Jersey Shore, Cleo and Toni, meet a handful of historical figures disguised as the carnies. Confucius teaches Cleo the "Zen of Snoring", Charles Ponzi teaches them the importance of "White Lies", Leonardo Da Vinci shows them the "Art of Multitasking", and finally they meet Napolean who tries to help them to "Accept Shortcomings" of each other. After going through all these lessons, the sweethearts decide that marriage should wait, and Cupid is proud of Shakespeare who has finally reached out to the modern youth. and all of Henley Middle school (or at least all of its drama classes) were the players for this kooky modern take on Shakespeare. I saw the play performed under the capable direction of its author at the school where she teaches. I laughed like an elfish marked, abortive rooting hog. Tons of parts large and small in this one, so all the kids can be involved in one way or another. Great way for middle school kids to get a whiff of Shakespeare without delving into excessively difficult texts. It's also a lot more fun for the audience. I highly recommend it for school productions. I hope to see more original plays from this author in the future.Product details

Shorespeare is a great combination of a well known Shakespeare play, "Midsummer's Night Dream" with an eclectic group of characters, and the setting is the Jersey Shore. The audience loved recognizing the historical figures that were offering advice to the star-cross teens that wanted to marry. Wise words given with an unique delivery. The antics of the pixies had every one laughing. I would highly recommend this play for 6th grade through adult! A great way for a multi-grade level drama class to have a large number of students as active participates!
